Joseph Schaeffer, 87, of Gurnee, IL, passed away on March 13, 2017. He was born on May 9, 1929 in Conoplja, Yugoslavia to Anna and Kaspar Schaeffer. Growing up in a farm/vineyard town with his brother Peter, he later escaped from a WWII slave labor camp and eventually immigrated to the U.S. in 1950 beginning a new life.
Joseph was a master mason and builder, specializing in Catholic Church and school construction. In 1968 he founded Schaeffer Construction Company. Joseph volunteered in church and Boy Scouts of America activities; he enjoyed classical piano played...

Joseph Schaeffer, 87, of Gurnee, IL, passed away on March 13, 2017. He was born on May 9, 1929 in Conoplja, Yugoslavia to Anna and Kaspar Schaeffer. Growing up in a farm/vineyard town with his brother Peter, he later escaped from a WWII slave labor camp and eventually immigrated to the U.S. in 1950 beginning a new life.
Joseph was a master mason and builder, specializing in Catholic Church and school construction. In 1968 he founded Schaeffer Construction Company. Joseph volunteered in church and Boy Scouts of America activities; he enjoyed classical piano played by his wife and dancing Hungarian Czardases and Strauss Waltzes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa, married for 67 years. He was the father of: Robert (Kristine), Anne (David), Michael (Mary), Kathryn, Mary, and Joseph (Jorie) and is survived by 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Visitation (9:00 am to 11:00 am) and a Memorial Mass (11:00 am) held on Monday, March 20, 2017 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee, IL 60031 (847) 918-0600. Graveside will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL.
